The Building Blocks of Tone This CD is not your typical Test-CD. It is about tone, and how to recognize its basic building blocks. Background: A musical instrument’s notes and tone are the result of its producing a fundamental frequency along with many harmonic and inharmonic frequencies when played. The distribution and relative volume levels of each of these frequencies determine the quality of its tone. One way to talk about and organize sound is to group it into "octaves," where the end of one grouping (octave/building-block) is twice the frequency of its beginning. Samples: Each sample has four segments. Segments 2 and 4 have been changed. Can you hear the difference? Boost in the lower Mids - (Traps) Boost in the Middle Mids - (Female Vocal) Purpose: While this CD can be used as a regular test disk, for instance to test speakers or crossovers, its main purpose is as an aid in improving your listening skills, so that you will be better able to recognize, name, and utilize the basic building blocks of a musical sound. This knowledge will help you to more easily and successfully improve sound. In addition, this CD will provide a reference point that will allow you to have a meaningful conversation with someone else. A conversation where you both mean the same thing when, for instance, you are talking about the merits of adding or removing some lower midrange in a vocal track....unless you both are talking about the same frequency range you can easily take two steps backwards, instead of one or more steps forward.
